Zithromax belongs to a class of antibiotics that treats different kinds of bacterial infection throughout the body. It is mainly used for the treatment of chlamydia. It is also used to treat:
- Bronchitis;
- Pneumonia;
- Ear, lung, and other organs infection.
As a matter of fact, the drug can be used for the treatment of certain respiratory and skin infections. The use of it has increased in recent times. It treats sexually transmitted diseases, a middle ear infection in children, and also bacterial inflammation.
The drug is generally available in three forms:
- liquid;
- tablet;
- extended-release liquid.
It is also used as an injection but only by the doctors in the hospital. The medicine primarily works to stop the bacterial or kill them altogether. However, you need to keep in minds that the drug does not work against viral infections like flu and cold.
How does it work?
This is a drug that belongs to a class of antibiotics that are known as macrolides. These are bacteriostatic which means that they treat the bacterial infection by preventing them from multiplying and thereby stopping them from producing a protein that is necessary for the growth of the bacteria. Gradually, the remaining bacteria also killed by the immune or dies by itself. This is something, unlike the usual bacterial antibiotics that kill the bacteria.
However, it does not break down quite easily like other antibiotics. Rather than floating freely in the blood, it is picked up by the white blood cells that are known to fight bacteria. The white blood cells then take the drug to the front lines of their struggle with the germs and here it becomes concentrated in the tissue that surrounds the infection. The concentration helps it to remain in the body for a longer period of time. This implies that the patient will need fewer doses to recuperate completely.
Side Effects
Zithromax can lead to some side effects too. Some of the most common side effects are loose stools and diarrhea. It also has serious side effects though they are very rare and would require you to consult a doctor immediately.
The side effects are:
- scaly or dry skin;
- fever;
- selling;
- blistering or irritation;
- stomach or abdominal pain;
- body pain;
- burning sensation while urinating;
- tarry, black, bloody stools;
- nasal congestion;
- dark urine;
- cough that produces mucus;
- difficulty in breathing;
- dizziness;
- fainting;
- fast and irregular heartbeat;
- drowsiness;
- earache;
- chest pain;
- soreness or dryness of the throat;
- indigestion;
- muscle or joint pain;
- a feeling of discomfort or illness;
- hive-like swelling in the face;
- loss of appetite;
- nausea;
- vomiting.
The common side effects of the drug do not require any medical attention. The symptoms are reduced when you get used to the drug. However, if the side effects continue for a longer period of time making sure that you consult a doctor.
How to Take?
The drug for bacterial infection can be taken through the mouth either with or without food. If you have stomach upset then you can take the bacterial infection drug along with food. It has to be taken once a week. This medication has to be taken until the doctor advises you to stop.
